On Wednesday, January 21st, seventeen members of the North Island chapter met at the home of Helena Stewart for the inaugural meeting of a new North Island Propagating group.

Led by Garth Wedemire, the members discussed the purpose of the group and the various methods of propagation. Additional group gatherings throughout the year explored other means of propagating.

On May 27, a number of the group members travelled to Nanaimo for a visit to Green Thumb nursery. Wolfgang Hoefgen arranged the tour having worked for the nursery for many years.

Then on July 7th, the group gathered at Jake & Claudia Ellis’ garden to pot up the many small rhodos donated by Ken & Madeline Webb. Many of these plants will be used by the club for future raffles and gifts.

On Saturday, Oct. 3rd, the group took another field trip, this time to Nanoose and Nanaimo to gather cuttings for propagating. Art Lightburn arranged for the NIRS and Victoria propagating groups to visit 4 gardens of members from the Nanaimo chapter. It was a first opportunity for the two groups to meet and get to socialize over lunch in Nanaimo. Thanks to Art and Susan for making these arrangements.

The final gathering of the year for the ‘bunny’ group was held on Oct. 28th at Dick Bonney’s garden, where Wolfgang provided a hands on demonstration of several types of rhodo grafting.

More details of the group’s activities can be found in the monthly Rhodoteller newsletters. Thanks to the many members of the propagation group for their time, dedication, and efforts on behalf of the NIRS.
