On Tuesday, April 30th, thirteen members of the North Island chapter made a visit to the Pilchuck chapter. Arriving at 3 PM, a welcoming tour and BBQ was held at Bill & Cheryl Gray’s garden in Arlington, WA
The next morning our group gathered at the Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden in Federal Way for a guided tour with Dennis Bottemiller and Atsuko Gibson. We then enjoyed a ‘box lunch’ provided by the Pilchuck chapter before an afternoon tour of the adjacent ‘Pacific Bonsai Collection’. By 4 pm, the group arrived at ‘Rhody Ridge’ Arboretum for a tour of the spectacular gardens, followed by a delicous Italian dinner with Bruce & Rose Nicoletti.
On Thursday May 2nd, Pilchuck gardens toured included those of members Jerry & Shirley Rock, John Marsh, Richard & Jennifer Fairfield and Doug & Donna Keough. It was at the ‘Keyhole’ garden that we enjoyed another delicious BBQ potluck dinner hosted by Pilchuck President Doug Keough and his wife, Donna.
The North Island members were very impressed with the gardens toured and appreciative of all the work that went into the planning, preparations and arranging of the tour, especially by organizer Rose Nicoletti. Many Pilchuck members were invited for a return visit to the Comox Valley in two years time.
Below are photos of the four day visit. Special thanks to NIRS members Doug Williams and Christine Aldred for sharing their many photos. Be warned, the slide show is going to take about 30 minutes to complete. Best to sit back with a cup of tea or coffee and enjoy the show!
